Basic Usage

Indexed Record

To link to an indexed record on FamilySearch, type:

{{FamilySearch Record|XHLN-69H}}

It will display as: FamilySearch Record: XHLN-69H

The alpha-numeric combination after the pipe (|) is the record ID. It can be found after the "ark:/61903/1:1:" in the URL of the record, e.g.: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHLN-69H.

Other FamilySearch link formats:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XHLN-69H

Source Image

To link to an image of a record on FamilySearch, type:

{{FamilySearch Image|33S7-9BSH-9W9B}}
The alpha-numeric combination after the pipe (|) is the image ID. It can be found after the "ark:/61903/3:1:" in the URL of the image, e.g.: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9BSH-9W9B?i=7&cc=1473181.

Other FamilySearch link formats have been used in the past. These URL's do not contain an image ID, so more investigation is needed. After you click on the old link format, you should be redirected to the new ARK link. Then follow the process above.

The alpha-numeric combination after the pipe (|) is the person ID. It can be found at the end of the URL person, e.g.: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G9WG-H98.

Other FamilySearch person pages are available for use. You can add an additional parameter to specify the person page type:

{{FamilySearch|G9WG-H98|sources}}

  • discovery

  • memories
  • sources
  • timeline
  • vitals

Usage in a Source Citation

All FamilySearch link templates can be used within a source citation giving information about the sources referenced on FamilySearch. They should not be used themselves as a source citation. See Help:Templates for more information.

Indexed Record

This can easily be done by copying from FamilySearch the information under two sections, when you're referencing a record. The first section is titled "Cite This Record". What you'll get from it looks something like this:

"United States Census, 1820," database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHLN-69H : accessed 18 March 2022), Isaac Franks, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; citing p. , NARA microfilm publication , (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll ; FHL microfilm.

The template with the link should then be placed within the source information:

"United States Census, 1820," database with images, FamilySearch ({{FamilySearch Record|XHLN-69H}} : accessed 18 March 2022), Isaac Franks, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; citing p. , NARA microfilm publication , (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll ; FHL microfilm.

It will display as:

"United States Census, 1820," database with images, FamilySearch (FamilySearch Record: XHLN-69H : accessed 18 March 2022), Isaac Franks, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; citing p. , NARA microfilm publication , (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll ; FHL microfilm.
